Sonic & Knuckles review

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 24 September 2007 07:20 (A review of Sonic & Knuckles)

By some ingenious feat of engineering, this game could be attached to previous Sonic games and you could roam those levels with Sonic and Knuckles, his new nemesis. More gloriously colourful levels and bonus stages, but with a superb retroactive feature that blew my mind as a young'un.

When I first collected all of the emeralds and super emeralds I managed to unlock hidden last levels that could only be undertaken as super sonic. That was without doubt my original ultimate achievement in videogaming history! If I still had the components to my Megadrive, i'd probably be playing this game as we speak. It's still the same fast-paced, action-packed, side-scrolling platformer, but it's just so much more fun to play!

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 review

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 24 September 2007 07:16 (A review of Sonic the Hedgehog 3)

A much more fun Sonic game. Before Sonic was manipulated into a childish and arrogant punk for the official cartoon series, he was the dour, sophisticated and mute hero of these games! Brilliantly, this game introduced the Save game function without the need of a memory card or any other add-on. The levels are fantastic as are the power-ups and special stages.

This game is easily my favourite Sonic game, especially when you add Sonic Vs Knuckles into the mix. Superb, I almost shed a tear at the end of the game!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 review

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 24 September 2007 07:13 (A review of Sonic the Hedgehog 2)

Sonic is back and this time he is accompanied by a sidekick. Thus begins the partnership between hedgehog and fox that is still going strong today. Who can forget the classic rivallry between Sega's iconic Sonic and Nintendo's fat plumber?

The changes between this game and its predecessor are nominal. The 'plot' remains the same, you're still chasing Emeralds and Robotnik, but the levels are longer and more intricate. The only thing I didn't like about this game was the '3D' special stages. I thought they were too difficult to be honest! With the addition of Tails, a somewhat dodgy 2 player element was added to the game, and of course the spin dash which you can not play Sonic without!

Sonic the Hedgehog review

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 24 September 2007 07:03 (A review of Sonic the Hedgehog)

Sonic the Hedgehog was my first forray into the gaming world all those many moons ago. Since then I haven't looked back. The game premise is ultimately a simple one. Fast blue hedgehog has to rescue cute animals from robotic prisons while hunting for Chaos Emeralds and his ultimate nemesis, Dr Robotnik. It's a simple platformer game with memorable characters and music. The levels are always challenging though, and they are well designed on the whole.

An indispensible part of computer gaming history and probably the childhood of most children born in the mid 80's. I still remember the cheat for this game!

Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun review

Posted : 2 years, 5 months ago on 6 June 2007 12:56 (A review of Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun)

Futuristic world-warfare in my favourite Command and Conquer universe. Many years have passed since the first Tiberium war and the Earth is suffering big time. GDI has pumped money into a whole new array of military units and just when you thought Nod were gone, they reappear, sparking another world war on the already Tiberium infested, ion storm ravaged Earth.

They tried something different with the units here, doing away with the standard tanks and replacing them with bipedal walking units. It sort of works. The most positive aspects of the game are the superb casting for the cutscenes and the extremely well created bleak outlook the game manages to create.

The only real drawback is that skirmishes against computer enemies are almost unplayable at the highest tech-setting due to the ridiculous 'Hunter-seeker' droid units, which target, attach to and then destroys a unit (which always happens to be your construction yard whenever the CPU unleashes it). Disappointing. The Tiberium story is one of the greatest ever told in a game though, no question.

Final Fantasy VIII review

Posted : 2 years, 5 months ago on 6 June 2007 12:42 (A review of Final Fantasy VIII)

Another outstanding Final Fantasy game. The first time I played it some 6 or 7 years ago, I really didn't like it at all. How dare they release this after the untouchable Final Fantasy VII! But as I grew older I came to appreciate the storyline much more. The storyline and the soundtrack are two of the games strongest features.

Many other people disliked this game when it came out and it was slated by fans, but I definitely think now that it's one of the strongest of the 3D releases. I think the NPCs are the most memorable characters in the game, some of the main party become extremely annoying but you can generally forgive their traits as vanities of youth. The final battle is amazing, you do manage to actually empathise with these characters. The Triple Triad minigame adds another couple of hours to the playing time and easily makes up for some of the boring parts of the story.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas review

Posted : 2 years, 5 months ago on 6 June 2007 12:36 (A review of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas)

'It's just another GTA game' I thought to myself as I loaded it up. That's not a bad thing considering I enjoyed Vice City immensely. This installment really is something else though. The main character is much more likable, the world he lives in is truly massive and the number of vehicles at his disposal means you find it very difficult to get bored of this game. You might even finish the missions quite easily, but the game never ends there. There is just so much to do and see, I found myself wondering aimlessly around the deserts at night, with no objective in sight, just enjoying the experience! Same for driving through the expansive countryside listening to some cheesy (awesome) dance music on a motorbike in the rain. Superb fun!

Football Manager 2007 review

Posted : 2 years, 5 months ago on 6 June 2007 12:18 (A review of Football Manager 2007)

One of the most addictive games of all time. My current game has consumed over FIFTEEN DAYS of playing time. Fifteen days I will never get back! The truly marvellous facet of this game is the fact that one or two months down the line I'll just take over another team and start all over again. Unparalleled variation with one of the biggest player databases of any sports game means that no two games are the ever the same.

Despite seasonal new releases of the game, they always manage to cram something new and worthwhile in. This has to be the best version of the Football Manager series to date. According to my current 'addictedness rating' I should add Football Manager to my CV. If only. This game destroys lives!

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 review

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 19 May 2007 08:05 (A review of Marvel vs. Capcom 2)

This game is pure and utter carnage. It is so bright, colourful and fast-paced that playing it is what I imagine having an epileptic fit is like. I love it. Playing this game with friends is amazing fun, both in Vs mode, knocking ten bells out of each other, or during Arcade mode where you can join forces and try to unlock the scores of new characters, costumes and stages.

It's so over the top and cheesey that you can't help but be impressed and chuckle along whilst you deliver a mind-blowing 120 hit combo on a poor, unsuspecting player that just tagged into the fight.

Command & Conquer: Renegade review

Posted : 2 years, 6 months ago on 11 May 2007 08:29 (A review of Command & Conquer: Renegade)

This game is the most hilarious game ever made. As a big fan of every game those boys down at Westwood Studios ever made, I was a little apprehensive when they announced they were making a first person shooter instead of their tried and tested RTS games. I had every right to be, it's awful.

The plot line is disgraceful, the dialogue is diabolical and the AI is a complete farce. It quite literally is the funniest game I've ever seen. Me and a friend played it and were in fits of hysterical laughter throughout. If you can play it with your tongue drilled firmly into your cheek then you'll be fine. If not, just take one good look at the front cover, you'll see the game that disolved Westwood Studios staring straight back up at you, and that should help you decide whether you want to play it or not.
